HESTIA, also known as VESTA, was a goddess of the hearth in Greek and Roman mythology. She represented the heart of the home – the fire. Every banquet began and ended with an offering to her. Each cummunity had a public hearth dedicated to Hestia where the fire was never allowed to die unless it was ritually extinguished and ritually renewed.
Hestia is one of the three great goddesses of the first Olympian generation: Hestia, Demeter and Hera. She is the oldest of the three daughters of Rhea and Cronus, and the sister of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Originally listed as one of the Twelve Olympians, Hestia gave up her seat in favour of new-comer Dionysus to tend to the sacred fire on Mt. Olympus, known today as the Olympic Torch or Olympic Flame.
