HECATE, HEKATE, or HEKAT was originally derived from the Egyptian midwife, Hekat. In Greece, Hecate was one of the many names for the original feminine trinity, or the Triple Goddess, ruling the Heaven, Earth and the Underworld. Hecate bestowed wealth and all the blessings of daily life, and was associated with the moon.
In variations of the Demeter legends Hecate plays a part in the return of Persephone from Hades. She witnessed the abduction and, torch in hand, assisted in the search for Persephone. The legend inspired pillars, called Hecataea, to be erected at crossroads and doorways, perhaps to keep away evil spirits.
Hecate gradually became venerated as a goddess of magic. In parts of Thessaly, she was worshiped by occult bands of female moon worshippers. In modern times, Hecate has become a prevalent figure in feminist-inspired Neopagan religions.
