HATHOR, also known as MEHTURT, MEHURT, MEHET-WERET, and MEHET-URET, appears in Egyptian mythology as the personification of the Milky Way.  She also became, symbolically, the divine mother of the pharaoh, Horus.  As Horus was also said to be the son of Ra, Hathor was considered to be Ra's wife.  It is said she arose from Ra's tears, and thus was identified as the Eye of Ra.  She has also been known as a cow-goddess of fertility and a goddess of joy.  She was deeply loved by the general population, but most revered by women, who aspired to embody her multi-faceted role as wife, mother, and lover.  More festivals were dedicated in Hathor’s honor than any other Egyptian deity.
