EURYDICE - In Greek mythology, there were several characters named Eurydice, but the most well-known was the wife of Orpheus, who was bitten by a serpent and died.  The distraught Orpheus sang so mournfully that all the nymphs and gods wept and advised him to travel to the underworld and appeal to the heart of Hades with his sad music.

Hades was so deeply moved that he agreed to allow Eurydice to return with Orpheus to the world of the living, but only if he walked in front of her and did not look back until they had reached the upper-world.  Orpheus failed to follow these instructions, however, and Eurydice vanished again.
