EOS was the Greek goddess of the dawn, who rose from her home at the edge of the ocean that surrounds the world, to herald her brother Helios, the sun. She would open the gates of heaven so Helios could ride his chariot across the sky every day. She was seen as the mother or creator of all the stars and her tears are considered to be the morning dew. Her Roman equivalent was Aurora.
