CIRCE, also known as KÍRKĒ, was a Greek goddess who lived on the island of Aeaea.  She was renowned for her knowledge of drugs and herbs and would concoct potions that could transform her enemies into animals.  In Homer's Odyssey, she invited Odysseus' crew to a feast, but had poisoned the food with one of these magical potions.  All of the crew were turned into pigs, with the exception of Eurylochus, who escaped to warn Odysseus and the others who had stayed behind at the ships.  Odysseus set out to rescue his men, and was assisted by Hermes who told of an herb, moly, that would protect Odysseus from the potion.  When Circe’s potion failed to work on him, Odysseus was able to force her to return his men to human form.  Medical historians have speculated that the transformation to pigs was not literal, but instead refers to anticholinergic intoxication.  Symptoms of this include amnesia, hallucinations and delusions. The description of moly fits the snowdrop, a flower of the region that produces secondary metabolites that can counteract anticholinergics.
