Cerridwen was keeper of the Cauldron of the Underworld, in which inspiration and divine knowledge were brewed. She lived on an island in the middle of Lake Tegid with her daughter, Creidwy, and her son, Afagdu.
Afagdu was extremely ugly, and to compensate for his appearance, Cerridwen brewed a magickal potion that would make him wise. The potion was to take a year and a day to complete, and she charged a young boy named Gwion with stirring it.
Gwion burned himself with the hot potion and immediately stuck the injured finger into his moth, inadvertently consuming some of the potion and receiving its magickal powers. Fearing Cerridwen’s wrath, he immediately ran away.
When Cerridwen realized what had happened, she went after Gwion. In the pursuit, she morphed into different forms, each time trying to outwit and outrun the Gwion, who would transform himself as well. Gwion would become a hare and Ceridwen would become a greyhound and so on.
The shape-shifting and chasing continued until at last Gwion turned into a grain of wheat and Cerridwen became a hen and ate him. However, upon returning to her original form, she realized consuming the grain had impregnated hert with Gwion. Upon his birth, she threw him into the lake. He was later rescued by a prince and grew up to be Taliesin, a great poet.
