BRANWEN was worshipped by some as the goddess of love and beauty. She was married to the King of Ireland, who did not treat her well. Branwen’s brother, Bran, brought an army from Wales to rescue her. In the ensuing war, all the Irish were killed save for five pregnant women who repopulated the island, while only seven of the Welsh survived to return home with Branwen, taking with them the severed head of Bran. Shortly after her return to Wales, Branwen died of grief. She was buried beside the River Alaw, where there is a barrow named "Bedd Branwen," meaning Branwen's Grave.
