In Greek mythology, Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. She was also referred to as Cynthia, an epithet because of her birth on Mt. Cynthus on Delos (for the same reason Apollo is called Cyntheus).
Artemis was the virgin goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, the moon, and childbirth.
When she was just three years old, she asked her father, Zeus, to grant her these wishes: To never have to be married, to have lop-eared hounds, stags to lead her chariot, and nymphs as her hunting companions. Her wishes were granted. All of her companions remained virgins, and she guarded her own chastity very closely.
Artemis' Roman equivaleent is Diana.
