APHRODITE was the Greek goddess of erotic love, beauty and sexuality. In many of the myths involving Aphrodite, she is characterized as vain, ill-tempered and easily offended. Though she was one of the few gods of the Greek Pantheon to be married, she was often unfaithful to her husband. She is also said to be the original cause of the Trojan War, which came about when she filled Paris with a fierce desire for Helen of Troy. Her Roman equivalent was VENUS.
