AMATERASU (pronounced ah-mat-er-ah-soo) was a Japanese sun goddess, and perhaps the most important Shinto deity. She is often described as the goddess from which all light eminates and is also credited with inventing the cultivation of rice and wheat, the use of silkworms, and weaving with a loom. She is celebrated every July 17 and December 21, the winter solstice.
