ALA, also spelled ALE, ALLA also known as ANE, was a goddess of the Igbo tribe of Nigeria. She was the goddess of fertility and is often depicted with a small child in her arms. She was also the goddess of the underworld, and it was believed the souls of the dead rested in her sacred womb.
Ala's symbol is the crescent moon. She is still worshipped by the Igbo today, who pay tribute to her each year during the Yam festival.
